HOW TO SERVICE BEARINGS

1. HOW OFTEN

Bike bearings should be checked every 5,000 km and if all the bearings spin smoothly, there is no need for a service or regreasing.

However, if they are getting dirty and do not spin smoothly anymore, then a thorough service is required.

Riding in high-humidity climates, sandy or constant rainy conditions may require more frequent checks and maintenance if necessary.

2. PREPARATION

Regular maintenance can be done without removing the bearings from the bottom bracket cups and wheel hub shells. However, for jockey wheels, we recommend they are to be removed from the rear derailleur cages to access the bearings.

For bottom brackets, remove the cranks, any spacers, and dust covers, and clean and remove all dirt and grease outside of the bottom bracket.

For wheel hubs, follow the wheel manufacturer's instructions for removing the axle, end caps and dust covers to access the bearings.

For pulley wheels, dismount the pulley wheels from the rear derailleur cages, and remove the metal dust covers.

3. OPEN THE BEARING SEAL

For demonstration purposes, we remove the bearing from the wheel hub.

How to open the bearing seals

Find the small gap between the seal and the bearing's inner ring. Insert a small FLAT head screwdriver. Avoid inserting too deep to prevent damage to the seal or bearing. Once the tool is under the seal, gently lift it upward

The seal should pop out with minimal effort.

4. DEGREASE AND CLEAN

Spray WD-40 degreaser (as it is very easy to be purchased from many shops) directly onto the opned bearing to loosen the grease.

Use a clean cloth or paper towel to wipe away the loosened grease. Repeat this process multiple times until all traces of grease are completely removed, as thorough cleaning is essential.

Allow the degreaser to dry fully and only regrease the bearing once it is entirely clean and dry.

This process can be time-consuming, so patience is important to achieve the best results.

5. REGREASE THE BEARING

To regrease the bearing, consider using HSC grease, suitable for both steel and ceramic bearings. Apply the indicated amount of grease as per the instructions, adjusting based on the bearing size.

Bearing greasing

Inject a thin layer of grease evenly around the top of the bearing balls.

Use your fingers to spin the bearing a few times, ensuring the grease spreads evenly inside.

HSC grease comes in a marked syringe, making it easy to measure and apply the correct amount accurately.

6. INSTALL THE SEALS

Before reinstalling the bearing seals, inspect them carefully to ensure they are in good condition without any damage. If you notice any cracks, tears, or other defects, it is recommended to replace the seals before proceeding.

Once confirmed to be intact, gently press the seals back onto the bearing, ensuring a secure fit.

7. FINAL CHECK

After a thorough cleaning, if the bearings spin smoothly again, congratulations! You've successfully saved your bearings, and they’ll continue to serve you well for a good amount of time. Remember to check them regularly, ideally every 5,000 km.

However, if the bearings are still not spinning smoothly, it means replacement is necessary. Whether it’s for your bottom bracket, wheel hub, pulley wheels, or headset, we can guide you through the process and help you select the right bearings for your needs.
