Getting the Best Out of Your Bottom Bracket - Break-In

As cyclists, we often focus on tyres, pedals, and cranksets when preparing for a race. Yet one component quietly makes a huge difference in performance: the bottom bracket. Whether you’re riding a new bike or gearing up for an important event, understanding how your bottom bracket performs over time can help you achieve a smoother, more efficient ride.

The “Break-In” Period Matters

Interestingly, the best performance of a bottom bracket is rarely immediate. From our experience, optimal smoothness is usually reached after 3,000–5,000 km of riding.

Why is this? When a bottom bracket or its bearings are brand new, the grease and seals haven’t fully settled, and the components haven’t yet been “broken in.” This means they cannot deliver their maximum performance right away.

For HSC and AITA ceramic bottom bracket as an example, we recommend at least 50 km of gentle riding to allow the seals and grease to settle. To achieve peak smoothness, however, you need 3,000–5,000 km of consistent riding!

The Secret Advantage of Ceramic Bearings

Ceramic bottom brackets have another fascinating feature: the ceramic balls gradually polish the bearing races over the first few thousand kilometres. This isn’t wear, it’s an incredibly subtle smoothing process that allows the bearings to run even more smoothly over time.

This effect is unique to ceramic bearings. Steel bearings, by contrast, tend to wear gradually rather than self-polish, meaning they don’t achieve the same level of self-improving smoothness.

What This Means for Your Ride

If you’re preparing for a race, it’s a good idea to install your bearings well in advance to let them reach their optimal performance. Even if you can’t log 3,000 km before race day, a minimum 50 km break-in ride can help the bearings settle and ensure smoother, more efficient pedalling.

Tip: Installing new ceramic bearings a few weeks before a race allows them to “train” alongside your riding, so you’ll enjoy the maximum efficiency and smoothness when it really counts!
