The Hidden Lesson Behind a CADEX Hub: Why Checking Your Bearing Size (and Using the Right Tools) Matters

When it comes to wheel bearing replacement, one small mistake can lead to a lot of frustration, even when you’re following the official manual. Recently, one of our customers discovered this first-hand while replacing the bearings on his 2022 CADEX 42mm Carbon Disc Brake wheels (2022 Giant TCR SL0).

The journey started with a simple question: Which bearings do I actually need?

Official documentation can sometimes be misleading, and in this case, the CADEX manual turned out to contain incorrect information about both bearing size and removal method. The customer's persistence (and a few smart tool choices) uncovered valuable lessons that every rider and home mechanic can benefit from.

Step 1: Always Check Your Bearing Sizes

Before ordering your replacements, take a few minutes to confirm the actual bearing codes

printed on your existing bearings.

In our customer's case, the official wheel manual listed the bearing with matching tool options, which indicates that the bearings needed are 2 x 15267 and 4 x 6802 bearings.

But once he checked by opening the hub, he discovered that the bearing sizes are:

Step 2: Use the Right Tools for the Job

Once the customer confirms the 2022 CADEX Hub Bearing sizes, the next challenge is removal and installation. The right tools can make all the difference, both for ease and for preventing hub damage.

Our customer initially planned to follow the CADEX “offset push” removal method recommended in the manual. However, he noticed that the method applies uneven pressure, which risks damaging the hub shell or misaligning the new bearings. Instead, he turned to two excellent reference videos demonstrating proper technique using an inner bearing puller and press tool:

For around A$100, the customer was able to perform the entire job himself.

Step 3: Bearing Removal and Installation Tips for 2022 CADEX Hub Bearing

If you’re planning to DIY, here are a few key tips to ensure a smooth process:

  1. Clean the hub thoroughly before pressing in new bearings. Even small debris can misalign the race or shorten bearing life.

  2. Use even, straight pressure when pressing bearings; do not hammer or force them in.

  3. Grease the bearing seats lightly before installation to prevent corrosion and ease future replacement.

  4. Test for smoothness and play once installed. Any binding or roughness means re-seating may be required.

Step 4: Don’t Blindly Trust Manuals

Even top-tier brands can have documentation errors. The real-world checks are always the best confirmation.

We know that no matter how careful you are, mistakes can happen. Just like in this customer’s case, he accidentally ordered two 15267 bearings instead of the 6802. We simply exchanged them at no extra cost. At Bike Bearing Store, our hassle-free exchange policy ensures you always get the right bearings without any stress.
